Permission modes: how cautious to be with Claude Code

Jun 27, 2026 · 3 min

Claude Code has explicit permission modes — from “ask before every single edit” up to more autonomous modes that act first and show you after. The right one isn’t a fixed personal setting; it depends on what’s being touched.

Start conservative on anything that matters: real business documents, anything customer-facing, your actual codebase before you’ve built trust in a specific workflow. Ask-before-every-edit costs you a few extra clicks and buys you a look at everything before it’s real.

Loosen deliberately, not by default — once you’ve watched a specific, narrow workflow succeed the same way a dozen times (a formatting pass, a specific kind of file update), a more autonomous mode for just that workflow is a reasonable trade. The judgment isn’t “do I trust Claude Code in general,” it’s “have I watched this exact kind of task go well, repeatedly, on this kind of file.”

Check current capabilities in Claude Code for the exact mode names and what each one covers — the mechanics here are worth verifying against the app itself rather than assuming.

The failure mode to actually watch for isn’t Claude Code doing something malicious — it’s an autonomous mode applied too broadly, so a mistake on one file type happens ten times before anyone notices. Scope autonomy narrowly, to specific proven workflows, not broadly to “trust it more now.”
