What is Claude Code, in plain founder English

Claude Code is the surface you use when a job touches actual files — your codebase, your landing page, a folder of documents — instead of just producing text in a chat window. You can run it as a terminal command, or use the Code tab if you’re on Claude Desktop; either way, the idea is the same.

The difference from chat isn’t that the model is smarter. It’s two things: memory and editing. Claude Code reads a CLAUDE.md file in your project folder and remembers your business session to session, so you stop re-explaining yourself. And when it makes a change, it edits the actual file and shows you a diff — you review and approve, rather than getting a new wall of text you have to merge back in by hand.

For a founder, this is the difference between “ask Claude to draft a fix and copy-paste it into your code yourself” and “point Claude at the file itself and review the change.” If you’ve never opened a terminal, that’s fine — Claude Desktop’s Code tab is the same thing without the command line.

You still review everything. Claude Code has permission modes, from “ask before every edit” up to more autonomous ones — start conservative on anything touching real business files.
