What is Cowork, and what founders actually use it for

Jun 25, 2026 · 3 min

Cowork sits between plain chat and Claude Code. Chat is you asking, Claude answering, you deciding what happens next — every single time. Claude Code is for anything that touches files on your machine. Cowork is for the work in between: multi-step tasks, a Project that remembers your context across chats, and workflows you don’t want to rebuild from scratch every time you run them.

A Project in Cowork is a folder of context — your goals, your users, your last update — that every chat inside it already knows about. That’s the same memory-file idea as CLAUDE.md, just without needing a terminal.

Where founders actually use it: a weekly review that reads your notes and pulls out priorities, a first pass at cold outreach, a competitive scan you don’t want to do by hand every month. Anything you’d want to make recurring eventually starts here — check current docs for the exact scheduling mechanics — this part of Claude changes fast.

One way to place it — three postures: Assistant (chat, you decide every step), Agent (Cowork or Claude Code, it takes several steps and reports back), Tool (AI embedded in something else you bought). Most of a founder’s actual judgment calls belong in Assistant mode — Cowork earns its keep once you’ve watched it get something right a few times in a row.
