Free vs. paid Claude: what's actually worth paying for

Plan names, prices, and what each tier includes change often enough that anything printed here would be wrong within months — check current plans and pricing at claude.com before you decide. The framework below is what lasts.

Ask these three questions:

1. Am I hitting usage limits regularly? If you’re cut off mid-work on a normal day, not just an unusually heavy one, that’s the clearest signal — the free tier is built for occasional use, not a daily driver.
2. Do I need Cowork or Claude Code for real workflows? The 90-day roadmap assumes a plan that includes Cowork — check current plan requirements, since which tier includes what has changed before and will again.
3. Do I regularly need a lot of context in one conversation — long documents, long histories, several files at once? Heavier context needs are usually where free tiers feel tightest first.

If none of these describe your actual week, staying free costs you nothing and there’s no reason to pay yet. If even one does — especially the workflow one — the cost of a paid plan is usually small compared to the time it buys back once you’re running real recurring workflows, which is the entire premise of this site.

The failure mode runs in both directions: paying for capacity you don’t use, or staying free past the point where limits cost you time every week. Revisit the question every few months rather than deciding once and forgetting about it.
